The town of Zumarraga is located in the upper part of the valley of the Urola river, which is one of the rivers that divide the province of Gipuzkoa into its natural areas. The town lies 39 km from the coast and borders on the municipalities of Antzuola, Azkoitia, Azpeitia, Ezkio-Itsaso, Gabiria, Legazpi and Urretxu.
Despite the lack of specific data, its climate can be described as Temperate-Humid of the western maritime variety. The North and Northwest winds are the prevailing ones and this fact contributes to abundant rainfall.
Zumarraga has a surface area of 18.23 km² and the height above sea level of the town centre is on average 356.9 m.
The town nestles in the valley and is surrounded by the mountains Argixao, Beloki, Irumugarrieta, Izazpi and Oleta.
The town can be reached by railway (on the Madrid-Irun line of RENFE, the Spanish State railways) and by road via the GI-632 connecting Beasain and Durango with an intersection with the N-1 dual carriageway and exit towards the Castilian plain; and via the GI-631 which connects with the A-8 motorway and the coast of Gipuzkoa. This road runs along the valley of the River Urola, which turns it into a beautiful itinerary for the Route that connects the Three Temples; it allows the visitor to get to know Gipuzkoa through its three emblematic monuments: the Sanctuary of St. Ignatius of Loyola in Azpeitia, the Chapel of Our Lady of “Antio” or “La Antigua” in Zumarraga and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Aranzazu in Oñati. Located right in the heart of areas of outstanding natural beauty, they are examples of three clearly distinct artistic styles and bear witness to our cultural heritage; the other access roads are the GI-2630 that links the town with Oñati; and the GI-627 that goes to Vitoria-Gasteiz.
