Zumarraga [History]

Leturia Brothers

Pedro Leturia-Mendia was born in November 1891 and died in Rome in April 1955. He was a Jesuit.

He studied ecclesiastical history in Munich before going on to teach this subject at the seminary in Oña (Burgos) and at the Pontifical University in Rome. Pope Pius XII commissioned him to undertake a number of works of history.

He is one of the top authorities among the studies dealing with the figure and history of St. Ignatius of Loyola.

Juan Lino de Leturia was an organist, and the conductor of the first municipal music band of Zumarraga. He devoted himself to teaching music and Secundino Esnaola and Busca-Sagastizabal were among his students.

Keen to perpetuate the name of the Leturia Brothers, in 1968 the Town Council of Zumarraga named a square in the town after them.
