Image of Zumarraga's most interesting places

Zumarraga has a number of places of artistic and cultural, civil, religious and gastronomic interest, which are worth getting to know. The following are of particular interest: the "Antio" or "La Antigua" Chapel, the Town Hall building, Euskadi Square, the Tower House and statue of Miguel López de Legazpi, Busca-Isusi's House, different sculptures by Basque avant-garde artists like Oteiza and Larrea, typical farm houses, Chapels like those of St Gregory or St Christopher, the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, the Church-Convent of the Order of Our Lady of Mercy (Mercedarians) and the cemetery.

As far as accommodation is concerned, apart from guesthouses, it is possible to stay at the Casa Aranzazu and the Hotel-Restaurant Etxeberri, located slightly out of the way and in natural settings making them conducive places to relax in. In the matter of cuisine, the best known places are the restaurants Etxeberri, Balentiña and Kabia and the bar-restaurants Iburreta, Meliton Jatetxea, Aranzabal, Ezkiotarra and Eliz-alde.

Due to Zumarraga’s physical union with the neighbouring town of Urretxu, the area for socializing par excellence is Kalebarren and its environs where one can enjoy the atmosphere and have a drink at the Alaska Taberna, the Politena, the Gau-Txori, the Kortaberri, Huts, Arkupe and Urdin. In the area of the stations close to the “Golden” disco in Urretxu are the Urola, Goitegi, the Bar Txarro and the Txindoki. The neighbourhood of Eitza offers the Café Eitza and the Korta Taberna. The suburb of Etxeberri has the Oleta.

If you have been up all night or have got up very early and are looking for somewhere to have breakfast, the places to head for are the Croissantería Txindoki, the Croissantería Alexander, the Bar-Croissantería Osinalde, Pastelerías Etxezarreta, Arruabarrena, Maite and Izaskun.

Due to the high altitude of the town you can enjoy excellent views of its centre and surroundings and go on excursions by following the itinerary of the megalithic burial monuments. If you enjoy mountain walking, why not walk up to Beloki (641 metres), Izazpi (970 metres) or Trapalata (635 metres)?

If you want to make the most of your stay here, you can do the Route of the Three Temples in which, besides the chapel of “Antio” or “La Antigua”, you can enjoy the Shrine of St. Ignatius Loyola in Azpeitia (and see Azkoitia and Zestoa on the way) and the Shrine of Our Lady of Aranzazu in Oñati as well as enjoying the landscape of the Urola valley and the Upper Deba area.

You can visit the neighbouring town of Urretxu –birthplace of the bard Iparragirre–, Legazpi with its famous Mirandaola iron works –and Ezkio-Itsaso– with its rural/industrial contrast– towns and villages which, together with Zumarraga, make up the Upper Urola area.

If you enjoy the seaside, you can visit San Sebastian (53 km), Zumaia (39 km) or Getaria (42 km), pearls on the coast of Gipuzkoa. Bilbao with its GuggenheimMuseum and its FineArtsMuseum is 74 km away.
